Moving Abroad? How to Pick the Top Countries.

“I want to move abroad, but I don’t know where to go or what do!”

Our family said the same way over 3 years ago, sitting in Los Angeles, ready to leave America behind.

Thinking back on our journey we offer these steps to anyone looking to organize their own move.

Key Steps:

  1. Acknowledge Your Current State – Identify what is pushing you to move (for example: unstable economy, better healthcare, lifestyle change).
  2. Know Your Motivation (Your Core “Why”) – Define the true reason for your move, no one else’s, since it differs for everyone.
  3. Understand Your Identity, Mindset, and Process
    • Identity: Recognize who you are (for example: retiree, digital nomad, African-American reconnecting with the continent).
    • Mindset: Be mentally prepared for major life changes and adaptability.
    • Process: Avoid jumping into decisions without a methodical approach.

The System for Choosing a Destination:

  • Create a spreadsheet with 15-20 criteria (for example: healthcare, cost of living, safety, the infrastructure).
  • List 20+ cities you’re interested in and rank them 1-5 (5 being the highest) based on your criteria.
  • Compare rankings to determine the top 3-7 locations.
  • Plan scouting trips to validate your research with boots on the ground (if possible).

Bonus Tips:

  • Leverage online tools, like the Xpat app, to connect with others moving abroad.
  • But don’t rely solely on opinions from online groups—do your own research.
  • Include a subjective “Vibe” score for places that feel right, really feel you.

You can create your own expat community by joining us on February 23rd, 2025 for the second MOVE ABROAD IN 3 EASY STEPS virtual workshop.

If the link doesn’t work the offering has passed – but don’t let that stop your move abroad plans.

We’ve created more timeless travel resources right here.

Come on, let’s make moving abroad easier!
